The crossword title SAD HUMMER must be some sort of clue but I'm no nearer finding the answer. The maths seems very difficult.

I thought it might be "August is a wicked month", but now I find I've gone wrong somewhere, so perhaps not. Nonetheless, this might be right - it depends where I went astray. See if it helps.
