That's puzzling - so-so looks absolutely correct (SOS + O). Does it cross with the first letter of ghost story?

Tale of..... is 9 across and it is the second S that is ( or was ) the first letter of 9ac - if that is what you are asking

The first S is 1 ac for Serpentine

That's OK, then - the G comes from something else

So so is correct but 9ac isn't ghost story, it's not a long story though.

The second s of the down clue is the first letter of the across clue Tale of ......

That's a classic example of what is known as a "double" - two perfectly reasonable answers to the same clue ("Ghosts" and "Shorts" are both spirits). Compilers try very hard to avoid them.
