For some reason I can't get 8dn: Set and course constituent? (4) - A - E. I'm thinking maybe race but am not happy with it.

game - as in game set and match in tennis perhaps

Thanks sudokulover. I did think of game (I suppose also you course, i.e. hunt for game?) but rejected it for some reason in favour of race. Game must be right. Don't like the clue though, especially with unhelpful crossing letters. This is the first time I've had to get help on a Guardian prize in years of doing them!

that was one I needed too, but I have a couple of other 4 letter solutions that I don't get.

the course is chase - remove the h - horse to give case - a patient

Didn't get round to finishing this one until this morning and I too couldn't fathom 8d.

Still not happy with game or race. Will have to wait until Monday I guess.

Just to join in the "race" or "game" for 8d: I put "wave" & still think it's a possible contender -- course can be a river, & hair-wave/set --- no?
