Thanks for posting this, syz. Quite a toughie. I think 1dn is simply fun + d (fund = stock), with added letter o.

Belated thanks, peterm: somehow I had counted the O in 38d as the extra letter (where it was G of course)-- so simple!

D = fourth-row
The def was obvious (FUND), but one of those that stares in your face & you just can't see it.
Especially annoying after 39D "third-grade".

Duh!

I liked this one. I did it in the boonies along with last Sunday's Azed, without dictionary or laptop. No problem with Harper's (though I must say it was trickier than usual), but with Azed I had to come up with words I'd never heard of; I figured they just had to exist, and they do! Thanks, Syzzie.
