Cannot get the logic of 23d: also is 1a "squashed"-not an expression I know. Clue is Undrape effect of belt tightening. Also therefore the logic of 3 down which appears to be a rare fungus.

3dn is a fungus; starts with E

4 is ECONOMIC; UNDRAPE is 2

23dn A IDYL(L) upwards (I know it should be "an idyll", but that doesn't work!)

There does seem to be an S fewer in the answer to 3dn than indicated in the clue!

No - 2 Ss fewer!
