After poor old Robert E. Lee turned up in the Guardian again today, I wonder if anyone can remember a named General OTHER than Lee appearing in a crossword?
(General has a cigarette in the greenery (7))

btw, did you now that Lee was offered the command of BOTH sides' armies in the American Civil War?

Not sure if it's an equivalent rank, but Marshal Ney is always a favourite...

Hi guys,
Yes, bullfrog, I remember a few "Neys", now - not a Jackson, though, mamya; maybe not popular with liberal Guardian compilers!

I think more likely the clue led to the answer 'Stonewall'

Was he the "Marching through Georgia" one? A bit uncompromising!

He had a fair few nicknames above the one often quoted:

Stonewall, Old Jack, Old Blue Light, Tom Fool

Lost an arm in the cause and died of complications.

♫Marching through Georgia♫ refers to General William Sherman and his troops.

Sherman of course - should have got that from "Operation Petticoat" (Cary Grant plays a submarine commander called Sherman; the sub is damaged and unusual methods are used to repair it; someone says that they are "victims of Sherman's march to the sea")
