Thanks jws. I've just checked "fiftennsquared", where it is given as "DUELED", with some criticism of the lack of indication of the US spelling.

To join in a bit late on the discussion: I don't really see that "led" can mean "spent" in any context, whereas the missing "for" with "dies" disturbs me less.Have you done others by this "Chifonie"?

I've done a few Chifonies - generally fairly easy, though sometimes a bit quirky

............and btw have you ever really listened to the lyrics of "Mother Hubbard"? Amazing!

My guess is that Spent =led in a time sense. E.g He led a quiet life.
