a ZAMINDAR or ZEMINDAR was a tax-collector. Unfortunately Chambers has lots of closely-related words, and I can't decide which one is correct

That's what I meant. All is miz -- even Somerset are now making a go of it after losing wickets to my beloved Lancashire

I live in Lancashire too - though hail from nearer Somerset (and this part used to be Yorkshire anyway!)

Kent -> Bristol -> Ashford (Mid'sex) -> London -> Lancs.

A recent golf event took place 2 miles up the road from me :-)
