Thanks ChrisE - had thought it was something coast but don't really understand any of the reasoning behind it (apart from the 'we' in west)

We + ST for "street" (way) + "coast" for "not bother to pedal on a bicycle"

And the W in west now makes perfect sense for 37a which I can't believe I didn't see before.

Can't find anything to fit the other - are you confident of your letters?

there is a game called quotations,if that helps anybody?
