No that's why it's a crap clue, as you say, but thanks for helping anyway cos I clearly didn't fully understand it.

there are dark forces at work in this world that we do not truly understand. I guess this clue is one of them

Is it me?Managed cryptic relatively easily, but can't cope with Quick crossword, bottom l/hand corner, any suggestions please.

I went for: tonic, tibia,baton round?, too, aroma and conga. Not convinced about baton round Ninian but I don't spend that much time on it.

Cheers andy, baton was the problem, never heard of it, tried 'blank' instead but really messed up. Hope all's well.

Yes it's all good thanks Ninian apart from the incessant rain. At least it abated this afternoon and we had some sun. Busy decorating at the moment, my sister's coming over and we're trying to get everything shipshape before both her and her husband arrive in early August.

Andyc I know from personal experience that Baton round is correct.
