I agree with the logic that gets to RECREATES as the 9 letter answer but where is the 5 letter "flower or plant" to take away.

Back to the drawing board, methinks!

I think RECREATES is correct. The 5 letter plant / flower to remove is REATE (which, according to Chambers, is a "water-crowfoot") which I assume is a kind of flower.

That leaves the 4 letter answer as RECS.

To RECREATE is "to indulge, gratify or amuse by sport or pastime" Chambers. REATE is another word for the WATER-CROWFOOT.

it's easier to see if you think sport/recreation. think how many towns have a park/sportsfield commonly called the rec.
