33d 'Note about sheep raised by leading character in Hardy novel.' It would appear to be Middlemarch - Please could anyone tell me why?

note is middle C, about RAM raised (presumably its a down clue) and H for Hardy?

Thank you - I would never have got that. I just kept thinking, Hardy didn't write Middlemarch!

Sorry - you said down in the original question. Leading character in Hardy is, of course, H.
