Stuck on two last clues - 16a: large-leaved plant (7). I have G_N_E_A. And 43d: winter warmers (7) for which I have S_A_V_S.

Thanks, Malone. I'd no sooner posted when I realised the answers were Gunnera and scarves. I too often look for the complicated answer rather than the simple one! Now I can get on with other things.
