metacomprehension, Neil! Which brings me to the subject of style: this crossword doesn't acknowledge a named setter - as the Listener on the previous page always does. Do we assume that it's set by the same person week after week? or a team? Who are we duelling with?

In response to Quixote, I have noticed that the latest Jumbo cryptic is in the style of their most challenging setter, and seems to appear about every third week. He or she is
twice as demanding brainwise as those Jumbos which appear in between. Also, it would appear, unless I'm mistaken, that this setter also compiles the smaller cryptic xword about every three weeks also, as some
are noticeably more difficult than others and are in the same style as this latest Jumbo!
