The brain, which wasn't at its best before I started, is now quite baffled by the top left hand corner of this -
1A - Comedian owning fezzes - his name's not recalled (7) (I have no letters at all for this.)
9A - Harried in the air once more, birds fly around (2,7,2) The second word ends in T, the last is -E

Any help gratefully received.

up against it?

1 A. Whatsit (I can't explain this one, but I'm sure it's right - it fitted the letters I had. It's got 'hats' +'wit'/comedian).

Thanks for this, but the last word almost certainly has to end in "E".

This comes from 6D - "Record made in secret never turned up" which I reckoned to be "EVERT".

However, I may be wrong & always welcome wiser words of wisdom.

'enter' not 'evert'?

6d could be Event (written backwards in the clue).

Chiff's answer is better (still written backwards in the clue).

Many Thanks to all those who put me on the right path. I took "Evert" as meaning "turned up" & ignored the fact that it did not properly come out of the rest of the clue.
