This is 'e' to 'n' (10 letters of the alphabet).

A 'heat' is a trial run in (e.g.) athletics. 'heat' also appears in the word 'theatre'.

If the 't' wasn't there, I'd say that the answer might be 'trivet' which has the double meaning of a fireside/tabletop stand and also a weaver's knife.
