I did not do well on this crossword (British understatement) but even with some help I can't see how the following 2 answers are derived. I'd be glad to be told how they 'work'.

10ac. Beat cheat that's passed away (5)
Ans.- Outdo

2d. Drink second short (5)
Ans. - Latte

2d short latter

out = away

do = cheat

second in drink = r

latte(r)
