Hi Guys ... haven't been on for a little while ... trying to wean myself off (soooo addictive...). Anyway, explanations (I think), please:

Pagan chessmen: one knight left out (7) INFIDEL

Footwear this old would get ruined (5) SABOT

Pagan chessmen: one knight left out (7) INFIDEL = i (1) + n (abbr. for knight in chess) + Fidel (Castro, left winger).

SABOT (a type of clog) + AGED (old) = SABOTAGED (ruined)

i (1) + n (abbr. for knight in chess) + L (left).
All of which is written around "FIDE"

You are quite right to be suspicious of the explanation that I gave to the first clue as I was incorrect.

I think it should be ...

... 'i'(1) + 'n'(knight abbr.) + 'FIDE'(international chess federation) + 'l'(left).

Nothing to do with Fidel Castro !
