I have CREDIT, which is defined as "swallow" perhaps, but I don't see the rest of it - any suggestions?

Credit has 'bird'/24, minus the 'b'/black in it?

Should have added - the 'ird'from bird is anagrammed with 'etc' in the clue.

Thanks very much, Joan. I was thinking more along the lines of "black" referring to "in the black" (with a vague bearing on "credit"), so I would not have got to your explanation.
