13ac Roman historian's account suppressed by emperor.
It must be "tacitus" ( a Roman historian), but I don't see why.
Also the critical clue 24ac ...12 in Latin and 12 in English (one 12 back to a 100) (5)
I have the answer (which I won't give, to avoid spoiling the crossword for others who haven't got this far) but, apart from the cross-references, I have no idea why. Any HINTS on this one, please.

AC (account) in TITUS (Roman Emperor)!
I can't help with the other one as I don't know the background (or answer), unfortunately.

Thank you both.
I didn't want to give more on the other one as lots of other clues refer back to it - thus I can only expect help from other Guardian solvers.

Hi Chris

24ac

ZOD I ( one 12 or dozen back) + A C (a 100)

The first two 12s iun the clue refer to the factthat there are 12 signs in both the latin and english zodiac

Very convincing, djawhufc - the only problem is the solution is (5) and is S?G?S!
If you've done the crossword, you will know that the implication is "zodiac signs", but I don't see where this is made explicit.

signs is the answer- sorry I wasn't clear there are 12 signs in the zodiac. It isn't the best clue in the world- the definition would be 12 signs

Yes - thanks. I thought that the definition was (strictly) missing.
