Not much discussion of the Guardian prize today...only two left:
16 ac: Left - red, if unstated? .E.A.N.D
and
22 ac: State novel by contrary author - men seem unable to put it down! T.I.A./.E.S
any help appreciated...

9 ac You would start a letter with ... and then initials
19ac not a spud but a ... upper class magazine
But why is "empt" "cut free"
