This 'horse' theme is something of a mystery to me, and I am finding the puzzle really heavy going. Some hints on 4 across and on 17a/8d would be very helpful.

4d it was "lost" in Ireland
17/8 think "sandy flower"

Can't figure out 14d Quiet woman let out revolutionary (9) S?E?T?R?N.
Also, can anyone explain 19d d Second 26. Answer is silver (Lone Ranger's horse), but why?
