Room to move bow of yacht on a tiny lake heading west" = leeway.

bow of yacht - y
a tiny - a wee
lake - L
heading west - read from right to left (backwards).

"heading west" to mean backwards, only works in across clues (i hope this is one).

"heading north" does the same job in down clues.

Thanks trevor. T'was indeed an across clue. I keep forgetting about single letter abbreviations such as the L here.
