I know this doesn't help your request as your answer has 7 letters and your letters don't fit, but I have seen an almost identical clue recently where the answer was EASTER (at the end of Lent) - anagram of STEER A.

Are you sure of your letters, as the only word I can find to fit D?R?E?T is DARKEST, which doesn't make any sense of the clue at all. I think Alchemist's answer is a good one.
