Could someone offer an explanation for what I imagine is the solution to 9ac., please?
I have 'The plot thickens'.

The clue is 'Things are getting complicated with switched on Willy, the cottager and countryman, among the numbers' (3,4,8)

The word complicated spans 2 lines so is hyphenated thus:com-plicated.
I can see 'the hick' inside 'tens' for the countryman among the numbers.

Things are getting complicated with switched on Willy, the cottager and countryman, among the numbers (3,4,8)

My interpretation is as follows:

Things are getting complicated = definition

Switched on = HEP

Willy the cottager - Willy Lott of Willy Lott's cottage fame (the cottage in Constable's "Haywain") = LOTT

countryman = HICK

the numbers = TENS

T HEP LOTT HICK ENS

The plot thickens

It's now part of the Field Studies Council centre - my wife stayed in Willy Lott's cottage when she was studying crane-flies
