20D I've got the answer but don't quite get why. He was on tv and had a spring at his rear end so it must be right. If it's an anagram of breezed there's an extra R.

Think I may have been put off by the football reference in 14d: Huge stars in Man Utd, as fans describe them (3,6)

R_D, _I_N_S

Are they known as the red fiends?

Thank you.

Can I just confirm that 26a is 'year' :

'Interminably long time covered by Defoe's 23'

when, as we know, 23 is diary.

Why an interminably long time?

Long = yearn, but interminable so no ending. Time = year.

Defoe wrote "A journal of the plague year", which was, in effect, a diary
