Despite the improved layout (see thread Guardian moan), I am struggling with the bottom right hand corner. For 19ac "Turn detective - many removed from gambling game" I have "pirouette". Is this right? Definition is "turn", and it includes "roulette" without the "l", but what about the detective?
Hints for "Plaintive animal sounds heard in area of common comparison" (3,4,2,5) would be appreciated - not many letters (see above!) but 3 starts with "t", 2 starts with "o" and 5 has "l" in the middle.

21d is a terrible double pun, I'm afraid, concerning breath exhalations and a country in the UK.

Thanks to both. Obvious with your clue, torquemada, but I never would have got it without - I agree it's fairly terrible!
