As a newcomer to your august company from the west, greetings!
It is with much trepidation that I take issue with Jazzgirl - but a martingale is a strap rather than a collar which runs from the girth on a horse to (usually) the bit.
Still don't see 6ac and 20ac giving me a headache!
Iachi da.

Welcome simple sam
You are absolutely right. The Martingale on a horse is a strap. (The Martingale collar is used on a dog) I am happy to be corrected.
6d is the shape of a ring d.......(11a)
20a is a quarter of a circle .
Hope this helps.

Good morning everyone, I need help. I see that 6d is the American version of 11a but don't understand the peak reference also I expected it to end in ...us. As for 14d am I looking for a London borough as the final answer ? Thanks, GG

Good morning gypsygirl

6d does end in US. It is shaped like a ring d....... 11a. For 'peak' think of a hill

14d is a district in London.

Thank you for thinking about me, jazzgirl. Mrs P was thinking about me too. She thinks I am the scruffiest being she has ever met, and was in the process of ordering lots of new clothes for me, when I produced a load of new, unworn garments. Pipesmoking is a hazardous way of living, and I regularly set fire to myself, and burn holes in anything I wear. Anyway, I am happy when I am scruffy.

Welcome aboard Simple Sam. I hope you will feel free to contribute regularly and often.

Best wishes to all.

P

Good afternoon Mr P
My husband was a pipesmoker for a good number of years (Clan was his favourite tobacco and a very pleasant aroma it had too) I well remember the teeny holes which used to appear in his shirts!

Just to be really pedantic - the standing martingale runs from girth to noseband, while the running martingale runs from girth to loops on either rein! - cheers all.
