I hope Jimbo doesn't mind me answering this - it's to do with T-junctions.
Smarten up = TITTIVATE.
TI (junction 1) + T (then start) + T IV (junction 4) + AT + E (first letter of exit).

I don't mind at all, saved me doing it, but perhaps in future I should always give an explanation for the reasoning behind the supposedly correct answer. Most times I do but this time!!!
