If "mallard" is correct for 12ac then I am absurdly stuck on 8dn viz -i-d. If mallard is wrong then I am stuck on two clues! Any suggestions? Nolus

What are the clues?

12ac - Old fast train slowing into stop, reversing (7).

8dn - Thoughtful Wagnerian issue, perhaps? (4)

second one: kind?

How on earth did you come up with the answer to the other one though? The word-play has me beat!
