If "mallard" is correct for 12ac then I am absurdly stuck on 8dn viz -i-d. If mallard is wrong then I am stuck on two clues! Any suggestions? Nolus

Me neither - but it seems to make sense :)
How on earth did you come up with the answer to the other one though? The word-play has me beat!

Mallard is an old steam train which held many speed records
Derived from
stop = dam reversed = mad
slowing = rall (short for rallentando - musical term for slowing) - reversed = llar
MA llar D

Here here Kiwikid. Paul usually leaves me confused. Is 1down Clampdowns? The name of the Mexican fighter 3down,21across would help a lot.[6,5] ---c-o -----
