Stupidly stuck on one clue - why is it always the short ones? 59Across - Girl heard on a porch?(5) _A_O_. I was working on it being a word for "porch" made up of 3 letters that sound like a girl's name + ON, but obviously not. Grateful for any help.

I don't know - I have seen it explained that you would hear Carol singers on the porch

carol:an enclosure for study in a cloister etc.(archaic)
