I have - E - N
I keep thinking WEAN but cannot see the wordplay.

pale = wan
ale finally = e

WAN= Pale + end of ale =e makes Wane

no, wean. wan drinks (takes in) the e.

Sorry I meant Wean . Wan=Pale, inset e = Wean!
