C - E - O - A - D. 3rd letter possibly 'O' but search engines unhelpful. Shurely somefink wrong.

Aren't the letters c-e-o-a-r the 'R' for 'rabbits'?

I had rabbits as well but now think it's dormice

Mrs G and true babs. Thank you so much. 'Dormice' we had. The mistake was on 12a Meditate or cogitate, finally 'ruminate'. 14a Not 'embroiled' but embattled. Finally, of course 'courtyard'.
