Can anyone help with 3dn: ?e?s?s. I think it must be "lenses" but I don't see why.

Isn't 1dn one of the best clues ever?

Knox is a Fort so , "Forty" + two (pair) gives "forty two" - ultimate answer for Douglas Adams in Hitchhiker's etc?

Lenses looks OK. French the = le, NS = Nuclear ship, and I am guessing the antagonists are bridge players East and South? Not 100% sure of my reasoning, though!

By the way Chris,
Welcome aboard! It's always best to give the full clue and any letters you have.

After further thought, we reckoned "les" for "the" French, including "n" for nuclear and "se" for South and East at bridge.
Thanks for your welcome, Bernie.
