One of my favourite clues in this puzzle, when I finally found out how it worked, was

21 Prophet’s host gives bard’s friend a drink (5)

Did anyone else get the FULL wordplay?

For those who haven't seen it before, the checked letters are W?A?E.

Big Dave

Jonah (prophet?) spent some time being "hosted" by the whale, partial explanation.

Next part, "gives bard’s friend a drink" not clear on? WH = Bards friend??? ale = drink

Help me Big D

You've done the easy bit Jim.

I hope this is going to work, as it will look stupid if it doesn't! This is the dedication page from Shakespeare's sonnets:

I thought the clue was wasted if left unexplained! To be honest I got it from a friend who is a Telegraph setter.

Evening All

Thanks Big Dave, Jim et al. There's another one I'm stuck on...

"Destined to keep German City in association with 15?" _ _ L _ I _ A _ E _

If they are referring to the answer of 15, which is THUNDERED, what on earth is this one ???
CULTIVATED / CULTIVATES / MULTIFACED / PALPITATED ????

I've got no idea .

Cheers

Jim,

Excuse my obvious lack of diction, but I've never heard of fulminated before, that's a new one on me.

Thanks AGAIN for your help.

Did you try out the ecribbage.com site ?

Cheers

Jim,

I've gust googled FULMINATED and it's correct, it's a kind of thunderous explosion.

How the devil did you know that ? It's not a word you hear everyday, and not in conversation a lot.

Anywho, thanks again.

Cheers
