When you think about it it's rather appropriately expressive. The shorter word, fink, was often used as a verb (I don't hear it used this way very often these days) meaning tattle, snitch, squeal. I think this was more common among children; you'd often hear "Did YOU FINK?"

Aah. In the UK you hear children and some adults say "I fink" when what they mean is "I think".
