Nice theme to this one! Have got stuck
on one clue:- 4 Down - "City coppers
in Scotland" (5 letters) P-L-S
Is this a Scottish expression I am
unaware of or am I missing something
obvious?
Also, can some kind soul explain
the make-up of these two clues from
the Times Cryptic Jumbo 950?
32 Ac. "Tie fly whsn holding rod
against current" Answer is LIGATURE
but can't quite see why. Clue 2 coming.

polis as in metropolis & polis is scottish for police

POLIS is a Scottish pronunciation of Police and also the suffix for a city (e.g. Metropolis)

i = current, gat = rod(gun) enclosed in lure (fly)

32 Ac. "Tie fly whsn holding rod
against current" Answer is LIGATURE
Tie = LIGATURE
Fly = LURE
Rod = GAT (U.S. slang for a gun)

Can't see where the I comes from or the relevance of current!
