Charlotte - 5d is one of the ones I meant by `a stinker` ! It isn`t a word I`ve ever spoken or heard spoken. Must be another form of laity, I suppose. I`m too lazy to look it up!

Magworth. Very nice of you, but I do have to ask for help on the Times Cryptic from some of the brainier ones on here.
Charlotte. 5d. the word means "not clergy" and the first two letters are an abbreviation of Los Angeles (now you may be even more confused. :)

and I had never heard of the resin so I googled it and was none the wiser !

I was so bamboozled by 5D that I resorted to The Dictionary.I'm none the wiser.I've never heard of this word which is the answer or the resin.

Charlotte. Another word for resin is shellac.
I suppose lacquer comes from the same root.
I found that in my Roget`s Thesaurus - very useful for crosswords!

Having finished RT40, I checked all my answers with Chris Mart's solutions on his website. He has made an error in his answer to 16a
It is not lanyard.
