Thank you for both answers. I had considered outdo but thought it doubtful. Is it somehow connected to outdoor? Outdo is a verb rather than an adjective like best.

If the answer is heinous I cant see the connection to a bear, climbing

The answer to the bear clue is HOOPOES
A hoopoe is a bird, and it has Pooh (as in Pooh Bear) backwards in the answer.

I thought heinous as ursine means bear-like + O for the egg) but I cannot get the exact wordplay.!. Perhaps one of the brainier ones can help here
