Have only one q.16a:"The biter bit" T?C? See no real reason for any of the possibilities.Found puzzle otherwise boringly easy.

(insect or small piece) Always open to suggestions however.

The puzzle certainly is not easy partocularly if you havent got the theme

14d would suggest mite is not right

I agree it must be tick. A tick (insect) is a biter and a tick is a Bit...as in "be with you in a tick (or bit)"

OFF = cricket side (as opposed to LEG)
KEY = opener
OFF KEY = Harsh, as in music
