Okay, thank you all very much for those.

OX ON IAN

One up...UP means at Oxford (University).

Yes, that makes sense.

Deck hands trapped in caged with no opening (5).

O - - - P

I have a possible answer for this (ORLOP meaning Deck), but if it is that, I don't get the working of the clue.

Also, this:

Hold it to cut out drawing (3-5).

T - E [hyphen] - R - A -

I keep thinking of TEA-BREAK.

Oh, I've got it now: TIE-BREAK!

Tea-break on the brain was stopping me from seeing anything else.

ORLOP is right. Hands are R and L (right and left) trapped inside coop with no opening = OOP

Great! Thanks, Brackendale. I was trying to work something with COOP earlier but just couldn't get the hands.

That's that crossword all done now. Thanks to all for great solving.

Here's a clue from this crossword that I liked - unusual for the length of word.

Gossip - one telling tales about criminal's last appeal, rejected before gallows (15).

- - I - B - - - - - - - - - -

It is a great word. I've never seen it in a crossword before.

Here was another good word:

Get fit and grope around for one who would 17. (11)

17 was this:

Can rising elite become pedantic? (7)
- - T - - - -

This crossword also had a couple of words I didn't know. I had to resort to the dictionary:

Stress being cut out, is getting around (5).

- - T - S

Vital force given up? Not at first(6).

O - G - N -
