Did anyone else feel this was crass and rather thoughtless given the situation in that city??

It was indeed cryptic, revolution refers to the solution being in reverse within the clue, but the whole of the clue had references that were too literal and in bad taste in my opinion!

I thought it was a bit infra dig for the Times.

Yes, I can see it now feARS A Bloodbath, i.e. reverse in the clue itself. Other words could have been chosen for the same effect.

I don't suppose you guys were very impressed with the commentator on the Women's World Cup Final (on Japan winning)..."Japan in celebratory meltown".... oh dear.
