That's exactly it - half meaning half term and to item meaning to take note of are both given in Chambers. Not a great clue, but they can't all be brilliant.

I now see that one of the definitions of "half" in Chambers is "a half-year or term". Well done aristo.

Hello, cornbrash and peterm! Here we sometimes refer to university semesters (informally) as fall half and spring half (especially regarding a full-year course). By the way, what were your clues for EASTER last week? Can they be released yet?

Half on its own to mean term is a new one on me.

I found EASTER a fiendishly difficult word to put into a Printer's Devilry clue, and the one I submitted was buttock-clenchingly feeble. I'm also not sure all my answers were correct.

You should have a go at Clueless, aristo. A bit of practice for the next one!

That feeble, huh? I posted mine here, using the word threne, which may be a giveaway as to where the break occurs but is (I think) apt. I assume that you have to send your solutions in by post, so mine would probably take a month to get there. I just read Kipling's "With the Night Mail", which (as you no doubt know) takes place in the year 2000 and is about the wondrous future when dirigibles carry letters at astonishing speed. If only. Yes, I should try the clueless thing. When I saw the name of the thread I thought it was begun by someone who was exceptionally challenged.

Aristophones, please have a go at clueless next week.A few of us started it 14 weeks ago and it's getting more popular.
Unfortunately most of us are not in the same league as AZED,MEPHISTO,GENIUS and so the clues have to be fairly straightforward ,but not too much so.
cheers TW

I shall. I enjoy the wordnik camaraderie here, the figurative towel-slaps. I wish we could exchange brews as well.
