I have B-S-E- S-N but can't see what it should be - do I have one of the crossing words wrong?

Thank you sallyw, that makes perfect sense!

So 40a is wrong - "Note irately composed is an untrue account" (5,4). I thought it was an anagram of NB irately = briny tale?
