Looks like brindle - so your 'o' may be wrong.

That was my thought but I am fairly sure my 4 down is right. The clue is Face defeat, and appear browned off? (2,5) For that I have ON TOAST

How about be toast?

You could be right but "on toast" according to my dictionary "have someone on toast is to be in a dominant position over someone, to have someone at one's mercy" and "on toast is served on a piece of toast". That all seems to fit the clue - I have never heard of "be toast"!

Supposing a child does something wrong, a person could say "He'll be toast if his mother finds out".

Just google "be toast" and you will see a few references in the press.

You must be right and it fits with BRINDLE but I still don't think it's a very good clue. Thanks to both of you for your help.
