Araucaria is at it again I see: 1dn - 'California alley turned when changing sides, like the Vicar of Bray'-(3,2,3). Hands up all those who are familiar with this without reference.
It's easy enough to work out & Google but I can see he's in one of his obscure reference moods. It's just tedious.

I agree Araucaria can be obscure. I can solve this clue but had to check with the dictionary on the three word phrase. It is probably an age thing - I can remember the Vicar of Bray from schooldays.

Thanks for these hints! That was my last one. (It's not an expression I've ever come across.)

Can you explain how 1 ac works please? I can see "cocks" from "prepares to shoot at" and I can see "cockscomb" fron "crest". But how does "comb" come from "26 battle" (or "lost battle", if 26 is a x-ref)?
