Just realised I missed one;

4d Unit uncovered and turned off to some extent (2,1,3) i? a ?a?

I was thinking "in a way" but can't quite
explain...

unit uncovered (remove the u and t)leaving ni - turn it to IN
Off = away
so in a way looks good

Take the covers off unit ie the first and last letters leaving ni, the turn it becoming IN and then add AWAY for off and you have IN AWAY hence IN A WAY
I said it was tricky
