Megan, I liked your explanation but I still find the whole clue extremely odd. I assume that you were called to the phone as the compiler wanted to know the answer to that one, again thank you.

how right you are gareth I often get the answer but haven't got a clue as to how it is formed. this crossword is weird at times but still enjoy doing it.

i never come to the obvious answer to mail, but sometime a different way of getting there, like nickel, just what american has in their pocket, but agree that this c/w can be rather off course.

I agree, can anybody explain how you get nickel from the clue? Found it very difficult today, there are one or two others I didn't understand either, so I will start another thread.

in reversed is ni, the scientific abbrev for Nickel, also a coin (change) in a yank's pocket.
