I nearly gave up on this early on as there are so many clashing cells, but then it clicked. I haven't quite finished the grid yet but I've got the author, quotation and work. The author and the work are entered in suitable ways and there are extra hints at the quotation in 36A and 9D. (There might be other hidden references I've missed.)

A very clever, enjoyable and relevant puzzle in the end.

Finished now - though just a couple of aspects of the word play I don't get.

There is a slight difference in the spelling of the word along the top in various sources but only one fits.

I've got the full quotation and just need to resolve one or two clashes.

Can you please help me? I have finished most of it but having trouble with the work across the top especially the third letter from the right. I cannot find any reference to this spelling of the work in google and I do not possess a 2008 version of chambers so is 8 down aform of test perhaps or am i on the wrong line.

how on earth does Lambert=unit of brightness?
L=lumen surely

You need the 2008 edition of Chambers to get Cahow. It's not in my older version.
