Fairly new to cryptics and was wondering if you can help with my understanding on this one?

A great cockney hello for the lady's maid (7) = ABIGAIL.

I understand 'abigail' is a term for a lady's maid but what is 'A great cockney hello' all about?

A Big 'ail
hail=greet

A (a) big (great) 'ail (hail - Cockney greeting)

a = a
great = big
ail = cockney hello. (dropped aitch (h)ail.
